The first 3D Disgaea game in the franchise, this was a BIG scary step for NISA to do as the Disgaea franchise signature look has always appealed to retro gamer fans and pixel junkies galore. With a completely different protagonist to take us through the Netherworld, we follow Zed, the lowest of the low, yes lower than a Prinny on his mission to beat the Demon God of Destruction.

Released 4th January 2021 and almost a year later for Playstation consoles.

The story takes us to a multitude of anime trope based worlds where Zed continuously hounds the God of Destruction whilst getting pulverized and then super reincarnating to new worlds. Luckily everyone on his team reincarnates too though Zed loses a bit of his humanity each time. We hear him telling his story to the Demon assembly. Whilst his undead pooch reassures everyone Zed is a lot stronger than the usual brain dead zombie, we start to learn his motivation behind his stubborn mission to destroy the God of Destruction.

I must say I really enjoyed meeting all the quirky characters in D6 from money mad Misedor voiced by famous youtuber Prodzz (Senshi, Delicious in Dungeon) to super hag- magical girl Marjolene. You are in for a treat with variety int his game and twists. You also welcome some familiar faces in terms of dlc i.e. Laharl, Valatorez, Fuka etc. On 21st June Nisa collaborated with the Hololive agency to bring you favourite vtubers from Hololive guised into pre made classes using their unique voices including Ruusha, Fubuking, Polpol Watameh and more. Best part of this collaboration they are free to download.

This game had a lot of new features to offer. Let’s look at the Super Reincarnation, you end up keeping a lot more of your stats. As much as AI is hated in certain fields, AI proves very helpful in Disgaea grinding/farming. SO much to say the tutorial encourages it. You can access auto-battle eary on in the game and you can set up AI commands per character. You can take it another step further to set the levels to auto repeat to get easy level ups while you go the shops and pick up some noodles or go to the loo.

You also get the introduction of the juice bar where you can covert MANA into level ups or stat boosts for each character. This has definitely made the over powering your characters a must. Imagine doubling your clerics defence?

On to the fun stuff, they have added more classes and by far my favourite addition was the crab class! Yes yes yes, added to our front line of cats, zombie maids and pumpkin doods we got big ass crabs on our team. The dark assembly is the same old mechanics with a mix of unlocking requests to get all these exciting classes. Turning your characters into bootles, making them hold novelty weapons. We got it all.

Also making this game a great entry for first time Disgaea players is the ridiculous levelling up and ginormous number stats – something for the trophy hunters to screenshot and brag about on socials I think. Also great for comedy value when watching the fight animations. Since the Super Reincarnation makes it easy to whizz through the game it’s estimated you can get through the main story in under 24h. If you’re a completionist then you’re looking at 77+ hours. Which is relatively short for a Disgaea game.

Review Summary

My hot take is, enjoy the game and use AI to grind all the post game parts. All the hard modes have been added in mostly for bragging rights. I'm only doing it if it unlocks a character, otherwise bring on the next game lads. Disgaea 6 has introduced new 3D graphics, quality of life features to attract a new audience at the expense of removing my favourite features like character world. However this game was a risk to pave a way to future Disgaea gems. I enjoyed the story like I watched a limited anime series. SO well every other anime fan out there.
