Square Enix have been on a remastering spree this year and I’m so grateful for it. Originally for the Famicom Romancing SaGa came out in 1996.
A remaster by Arte Piazza was made in 2016-2017 and now in 2024 we have the 3D remaster on Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and 5. Following in Visions of Mana’s steps. We have a gorgeous game, with character dainty models gliding in the screen.

Set during the history of the kingdom of Avalon, the player takes on the role of a dynasty of different rulers as they fight the Seven Heroes. The Big feature of the game is magic inheritance and retaining your memories and gaining others and also their immense power to your skill set.
Unlike traditional jrpgs, there are no experience points in this game and character attributes and skills are dependent on actions taken in battle, if a character hasn’t been used they gain nothing.
Coming across physical monsters on screen to beat and respawning every time you leave an area.

The fighting mechanics focus on a turn based front and back line so you will need to change your group formation as and when. Be prepared to have a strong defender who will take a majority of the physical attacks. Each character can have multiple weapons equipped. Once you’ve tried hitting the monster with different weapons it will highlight the strongest weapon. Magic points are where you will struggle so have plenty of items in your bag for boss battles.
A nice touch is before a boss there will be save post and you will be able to heal everyone ONCE, so activate it wisely. Grinding can be done at certain points of the game so there is a break in the loop.

Review Summary
My thoughts are true rpg fans who enjoy complicated intricacies and features will really enjoy getting to the nuts and bots of the mechanics of the game. You can grind as much as you like and explore uncharted territory in this non linear game. It is the most popular in the Romancing franchise and has receive a positive reception for this full 3D remaster and will attract new players to the Square Enix fold.
